What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractors are experts at diagnosing, treating and helping to prevent musculoskeletal (muscle & joint) problems throughout the body. Not only do chiropractors treat these painful conditions but they also appreciate the effect they can have on your nervous system and overall life.
Chiropractors then spend four of five years in University training. As well as this there are post-graduate training and mentoring programs for new graduates. This is because as regulated primary health care practitioners we are required by law to be able to assess a wide range of conditions. We can then offer a wide range of care packages to suit the individual’s needs and condition.
At Lushington Chiropractic the particular focus in on getting to the root of the problem, helping the body to actually work better. We do this by improving the way muscles and joints actually work, part of our intention is also to help to ensure your nervous system can function at it’s best without interruption.
The techniques used will be tailored to your individual age and stage of life. We see pregnant mothers and very young babies ranging from just four weeks right through to older people in their nineties. We also have plenty of patients with osteoporosis, arthritis and other health concerns.
In every case, the type of treatment and advice will vary according to the person’s needs. There is much more to modern chiropractic than just manipulation.
Can I see you if I’m already in a lot of pain? I’m nervous about the chiropractic treatment hurting
Chiropractors are used to seeing people in severe pain. If you’ve ever had a “slipped disc” or “sciatica” then you’ll know what that means.
Chiropractors are well used to finding the right treatment for you, what ever age, condition or level of pain you’re in so you don’t need to worry. Just let your chiropractor know if you are nervous.
Are you “real Doctors”?
Chiropractors, medics, vets and dentists are the only professions entitled use the Dr title. Each of these professional are protected titles and regulated by law. Chiropractors are not medical doctors nor are chiropractors required to hold a PhD.
At Lushington Chiropractic all our chiropractors are Doctors of Chiropractic (hence our post-nominal letters “DC”). We are not medical doctors. As detailed by law all our chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council.
How old is Chiropractic?
Some of the massage and adjusting techniques used by chiropractors have been perfected over thousands of years.
Chiropractic was defined and discovered as a distinct profession in 1895. The profession has grown and become increasingly popular over the last 100 years.
More and more people are using chiropractic care to help them with their various aches, pains and other problems. In fact chiropractic has become so common now that it is the third largest healthcare profession, after medicine and dentistry.
Duty of Care and Confidentiality
We will never contact anyone without your permission, unless we suspect a child or vulnerable person is at risk, when our duty of care will require that we take actions.
Will you tell my GP that I am coming to see you?
At Lushington we insist on spending 45 minutes to an hour with you on your first visit. Because we spend so much time assessing your case we occasionally identify medical problems that may have not come to your GP’s attention. In these cases we like to write to your GP to keep your medical records up to date as well (if you give your permission).
If you have a condition that chiropractic cannot help with, then we will refer you to your GP for medical care, with a detailed letter outlining our findings and recommendations. We have referred a few cases directly to orthopaedic consultants for their opinion on the need for surgery. We believe it’s better to work as a team, keeping the patient’s interests at the forefront of our decision making.
We are committed to working with GPs, the NHS and health insurance companies to help deliver a more integrated and truly patient focused package of care. We are pleased that a number of nurses, GPs and even one consultant surgeon chose us to provide their chiropractic care here in Eastbourne.
What do you treat most often?
Chiropractors are famous as “back specialists”. But we can help to ease a range of other related conditions throughout the body.
You’re the ones who “crack backs” aren’t you?
No way! Modern chiropractors are trained in a range of treatments, suitable for all ages from little babies to the very elderly,
Our chiropractors spend 45 minutes to an hour going through their patient’s cases in detail, giving them practical advice on posture or stretches, vitamins etc. Everything is tailored to you.
What is the treatment like?
Chiropractors use a range of treatments and techniques and advice to help you. This is termed a “package of care”. At Lushington we tailor this to each patient personally.
As part of this package of care, your chiropractic treatment may involve safe, often gentle, adjustments to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from this our Lushington chiropractors may also use a variety of techniques including massage, ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise programs, acupressure and acupuncture as well as advice about nutritional supplements, posture and lifestyle.
People are often surprised how wide a range of treatment, techniques and advice modern chiropractors offer.
It’s worth remembering that although chiropractors are not “anti” drugs, our profession does not prescribe drugs or do surgery. We have chosen to specialize in other area instead.
Is it rough?
Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everybody, all ages and stages of life. Treatment and care packages will be tailored specifically to the person’s needs.
In Eastbourne we are well used to seeing people of all ages from birth to almost one hundred years old. We are trained and very experienced in knowing what to do to help people with complex medical histories, previous joint replacements or surgeries, severe arthritis, osteoporosis, mobility problems, or other challenges and disabilities.
Our Chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques. Some people get on better with a gentle, delicate approach. Our chiropractors will seek your permission before they do anything and will only do what they think is good for you.
As you can see from our awards and Quality Marks, you’ll find that you’re in safe hands. Even now most of our patients have been recommended specifically to us by their friends and family by word of mouth.
Am I too old for Chiropractic?
The answer to this is simple: No.
Is Chiropractic Regulated by Law?
Yes. In the UK chiropractic is a regulated, primary healthcare profession. This means that just like medical doctors and dentists etc we have to belong to our own regulatory body, the General Chiropractic Council.
British chiropractors are insured, regulated and increasingly recommended by the NHS. In fact chiropractic has become so popular now that it’s the third largest healthcare profession after medicine and dentistry.
So you can be assured of the best treatment for your problem.
