Behind the scenes with the Clinic Assistants at Lushington Chiropractic
The Lushington Chiropractic Clinic Assistants
Do you ever wonder what the clinic assistants get up to when they are not managing the front desk or answering the phones? We get to see lots of guests here at Lushington Chiropractic but we only ever see you within the treatment experience and we thought it would be really nice to share with you some of the other things that go on behind the scenes and that took place on a typical Tuesday in November.
First off telling us about her day is Judy.
I arrived early for my shift to start at 7.30am as I like to feel that I am on top of things so that I can give the reception desk my full attention. I really enjoy meeting and greeting people as they come in and chatting about a myriad of subjects from the weather to the traffic to where they went on holiday! It is always lovely to speak to someone who first came to us in a lot of pain and are so happy that they are starting to feel so much better as a result of the treatment they have received at the clinic here in Eastbourne.
One of the early jobs of the day is to make sure that the Massage Therapists have a plentiful supply of towels and blankets for their busy day ahead. We have 4 massage therapist here at Lushington Chiropractic who all work in different ways to help relieve simple things like stress in the shoulders or more complicated conditions like frozen shoulder or tennis elbow, the Chiropractors often refer their guests for massage to be used in conjunction with their chiropractic treatment and it works very well.
My fellow clinic assistant Theresa took over on the reception desk so that I was able to go into the office and work on administrative things like checking our databases to make sure we have all the correct details for our guests, it is surprising how often Eastbourne gets incorrectly spelt! Or the dialling code for Eastbourne telephone numbers is not included.
I was delighted to be told by another of our lovely team of clinic assistants, Claire that one of our guests had tried some cake that I had made for Kirsty one of our Massage Therapists here at the clinic in Lushington Road for her Birthday, he had enjoyed it so much he wanted the recipe!! We all know we should eat as healthily as possible but who doesn’t enjoy a slice of cake now and again?
We are a very close team and we like to try and make people feel special when it is their Birthday.
I sorted out our ‘events box’, Our Chiropractors often go to outside events in the Eastbourne area where they are able to meet people who live locally who have possibly never tried Chiropractic, The Chiropractors enjoy speaking to people and finding out what may be worrying them and usually it is something they can help with and they will then advise them to make an appointment for a full assessment where the Chiropractors can get to the root of the problem and work out a personalised care plan for them.
I started working on a project of collating all the wonderful testimonials that our guests have written about the great care they have received here at the clinic in Eastbourne.
Thanks for sharing your day with us Judy.
Next we hear from Carole.
Well fortunately for me, today is a lovely sunny day in Eastbourne – well it is known as suntrap of the south! My shift at Lushington Chiropractic starts at 9am today but I am here nice and early to get ready for the day ahead. My day today starts with checking the front and back drive for any rubbish that has blown on and clearing a mound of leaves that has accumulated, not a very glamorous job but we are all proud of the clinic and take turns in doing it. After this I make a start on pulling the guests files for the following day.
Part of our job is to support the practitioners making sure they have everything they need and with 5 chiropractors and 4 massage therapists we tend to generate a lot of washing. Chiropractic and massage bench covers are changed regularly and as well as the hand towels you see in the bathroom we also have the towels in the treatment rooms, blankets and any gowns that we use for new guests. You may well have seen our washing drying on the back drive, to do our bit for the environment we try to dry it outside as much as possible but as you know the weather here in Eastbourne can be unpredictable!
The chiropractors have asked me to telephone some of their guests just to catch up with them, this could be to check how their exercises are going or for those who we haven’t seen for a while just a quick call to ask how they are feeling, or perhaps to remind them to make their next appointment. If possible it’s always good to book your appointments ahead especially if you can only come at a particular time, those early morning and late evening slots get really booked. It’s the same with massage as well, if you can only come after work or you want an early slot before work – book ahead.
Next we hear from Theresa.
I am working a few extra hours today in addition to my afternoon shift to cover the front reception for Judy. So the first job of the day is to do a reconciliation of the takings so far as we are each responsible for our shift money. Judy also does a handover telling me everything I need to know for the shift ahead.
Throughout the morning I welcome regular guests and check they are on time, and then can relax until the chiropractor collects them. I answer all incoming calls which can be a variety of enquiries, ranging from new guest enquiries, to re-scheduling appointments. The clinic has several telephone lines so often we have to answer more than one phone at once.
CA’s have many jobs that have to be completed throughout the course of the shift in addition to manning the reception and that includes checking the emails, responding to them or passing on to other colleagues. Pulling the guests files for the next day, checking and actioning a daily list of guests with outstanding appointments. It also includes keeping the reception and toilet facilities clean and tidy, washing the bench covers, hand towels, pillow cases and all the admin jobs.
After my lunch break I resume my front desk/reception duties for the afternoon shift until close at 7:15pm.
6:30 – 7:15pm
I start preparing the clinic for the end of the day, this includes bringing in the sign from outside, turning off the music system and computers, clearing away the files, washing and doing the end of day banking. Once all the practitioners have finished for the day I go round and do a last check of the rooms and lock up for the day.
Well – you have probably noticed that our super CA Claire is missing!
Claire’s tasks are too many to mention here. Not only does Claire do all the lovely power-point presentations that you see in reception, the newsletters that many of you get by email, the ordering of all the stock that we hold here at the clinic, the shopping we need on a daily basis including the lovely lemon that is in the water jug in reception as well as the apples – and don’t forget the loo rolls! She makes sure our appointment system is fully up to date, the annual leave calculated and that we get paid at the end of the month! She’s also the one that we all turn to for help and it is very much appreciated.
Look out early next year when Claire will be telling you what she gets up to on a typical day.
We would all like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about us, don’t forget all the useful hints & tips you can find on our online chiropractic blog Backblog.
Why I love working at Lushington Chiropractic
Why I love working at Lushington Chiropractic
I love working at Lushington Chiropractic…
I know many people may be surprised by that statement. There are so many people I come across who do not enjoy their jobs, but for me it really is the case!
I find it very interesting to see people come in to the chiropractic clinic in great discomfort and feeling uneasy as they don’t really know what to expect. As a clinic assistant I try to be friendly and welcoming and answer any questions that they may have, the most common one being …”Where is the toilet?”
Once they have seen the chiropractor the guest is often visibly relieved, they know that the chiropractor has given them an extremely thorough examination and knows exactly what is wrong with them and more importantly that something can be done about their problem or issue.
Often after only a very few visits the guest will comment about how much better they feel. Sometimes these people have experienced pain for a long period of time and had resigned themselves to ‘putting up with’ their issue. For many, the only solution they had found was to take pain killers – which, of course, only masks the symptoms and doesn’t get to the root of the problem.
The chiropractors are constantly learning and all attend courses that further their knowledge and allow them to develop their own specialities. For instance, Caroline Mulliner (Doctor of Chiropractic) loves working with children and Victoria White (Doctor of chiropractic) enjoys using dry needling (acupuncture). It triggers the body to produce pain-relieving substances such as endorphins and serotonin in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received and improves circulation to the area and decreases muscle tightness, which can have the effect of increasing joint flexibility.
Mykel Mason (Doctor of chiropractic) has attended several courses which has enabled him to help people a lot with exercises to improve their posture which in turn helps to alleviate their symptoms and James Revell (Doctor of chiropractic) has attended many courses one of which recently was all about using Rocktape, which can have a dramatic effect on swollen and bruised skin.
Lushington Chiropractic has received multiple chiropractic and customer service awards. We won Business of the Year in 2014 and we are the only business in Eastbourne to gain a PPQM award from the Royal College of Chiropractors. This recognises excellence in meeting patient expectations, treating patients with respect and providing outstanding levels of service and care.
This is because we try to maintain very high standards with the work of all the professionals and the clinic assistants. The clinic is always clean and tidy and interesting for people when they come to visit. We aim to make every visit as beneficial for our guests as possible, so there are always lots of chiropractic and health-related materials on the walls and notice board for people to read. We also like to fill the clinic with fun things that will bring a smile to people’s faces, like photographs from the latest charity challenge that someone has taken part in!
A new innovation brought in within the team at Lushington is ‘Team member of the month’. Once a month at our regular team meetings we vote for a member that has done something that has touched us, or cheered us up or just made us smile. The person with the most votes is made team member of the month and their picture goes on the wall for all guests to see with a miniature, and I do mean miniature trophy!!
Charity work is something that is very important at Lushington Chiropractic. The clinic has taken part in many charity events:
In 2014 James Revell (Doctor of Chiropractic), Sue Hudson (Massage therapist), our podiatrist, admin staff and some chiropractic guests completed the Paris to Eastbourne Pier bike ride in 24 hours which raised money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
Later on in the year, James Revell (Doctor of Chiropractic) and some friends of the clinic independently completed a London to Lushington bike ride, 90 miles in 12 hours from Buckingham Palace to Eastbourne raising more money for St Wilfrid’s
In November, several of the male team members grew moustaches for ‘Movember’, which raises funds for Men’s health (testicular cancer, prostate cancer and poor mental health and physical inactivity). It is a sad fact that on average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women.
Throughout the year during the Eastbourne schools’ half-term holidays Lushington Chiropractic offers Free Health Posture Checks for school age children, waiving the fee in exchange for a donation to Barnardo’s Children’s Charity.
Lushington Chiropractic entered a team into the Gauntlet Games on Saturday 8th August 2015 in aid of Barnardo’s.
James Revell, Mykel Mason and Claire, one of our fabulous clinic assistants, were joined by three other brave (possibly foolish) team members to slip, slide and crawl their way through a series of obstacles manned by gladiators doing their best to throw them off course! James and Mykel completed the 10k course and the ladies completed the 5k
They were extremely muddy and tired at the end but had had a fantastic time and helped to raise money for Barnardo’s at the same time!
Lushington Chiropractic is also registered with ‘Hands for Heroes’
What is ‘Hands for Heroes’ about? It’s about honouring our courageous Servicemen and women, both serving and retired, by providing valuable, practical, hands-on care to relieve physical, emotional and chemical stress and trauma.
We provide a series of sessions of chiropractic care that is free to Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan veterans
Hopefully it is becoming clear that we at Lushington Chiropractic are serious about chiropractic care but do not take ourselves too seriously!!
One thing that we do every month to enable us to keep in touch with each other and keep up to date with what is going on in each other’s lives is ‘Lush News’, where we write a short piece about what has been going on for us accompanied by photos which can be very interesting!!!
My husband likes to grow vegetables and flowers and sometimes the amount that he produces at the height of the growing season can be a bit overwhelming!! So it is a good thing that everyone at Lushington is very keen to try to eat a healthy balanced diet from our supplies. Needless to say, this often leads to some weird and wonderful concoctions appearing in the form of juicing experiments. In fact, the latest innovation has been various kinds of vegetable spaghetti made using a spiralizer. I always know that the excess veggies will be gratefully received at the clinic and never seem to hang around for very long and the flowers help to brighten up the reception area…..Keep up the good work Phil!!
You may be wondering what chiropractors do?
Chiropractors have expert training to diagnose and treat muscle, joint and trapped nerve type problems throughout the body. The focus is always on getting to the root of a problem and helping the body work better.
Chiropractors are specialists. They are also licensed to take and read x-rays.
Our aim is to help the body work at its best, as healthy as possible.
Health is a state of optimal physical, mental and social wellbeing. Not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.
The way we think about health makes a difference to the way we live. It helps us make important choices about how we look after our body.
Good health depends on your body’s ability to cope with the stresses and strains of life. Good health is when each and every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body are working at their best.
Chiropractors believe health comes from within. When our body is working properly, it knows what to do, when and how to do it and when to stop doing it.
Chiropractic is so much more than just backs……….Most often, people go to chiropractors the first time for relief from back pain. But chiropractors treat a broad range of complaints, from back and neck pain to headaches, arthritis and more. Moreover, people don’t need to have a specific complaint to benefit from a visit. Chiropractors also focus on on-going preventive and wellness care. Chiropractic care is effective for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
Here at Lushington Chiropractic we are also able to offer many therapies that work well alongside chiropractic.
What is therapeutic massage?
Therapeutic massage means massage used to treat a condition. It can involve gentle and/or deep tissue massage techniques, depending on what you need or want. Therapeutic massage helps to relieve pain or injury problems and feels great. Although a course of treatment is often needed, most people feel the benefits immediately. As well as massage, you might also be given advice on stretches and/or exercise to help your muscles heal properly.
At Lushington we only work with massage therapists with the highest of standards and training. We’re blessed with a fabulous team of therapists, each of whom have years of experience as well as a background in sports or health too.
Our massage therapists are highly professional and love what they do. As well as their original qualifications they’re constantly doing continuing professional development courses and studies.
Remember the firmness of the massage is entirely up to you. Just let them know when you see them if you’d prefer light, relaxing massage or deeper, firmer sports massage.
You can also enjoy Traditional Chinese Acupuncture at Lushington, which is practised by Robert Bowley.
Robert practices Chinese “syndrome acupuncture” (mainstream acupuncture as practised in China).
This type of acupuncture is an aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been practised for thousands of years. It is now one of the most widely recognised complementary therapies.
Lushington is proud to have local leading podiatrist Marie Upton BSc (Hons), Podiatry MChs, Member of HCPC as part of the team. Marie has a passion for podiatry and foot care. She has thirty years of experience and continues to develop her knowledge and clinical skills with regular continuing professional development, courses and seminars.
Apart from the common issues like corns and callus or nail disorders, a number of disorders such as diabetes can affect your feet and there might also be a case of functional and or structural disorders that Marie can help with.
Steve Clifford R.M.N, R.N.LD, Dip.C, Pg, C.C.P, Pg.D (CBT), A.C.T.P has worked in the field of psychological health for over thirty years. He believes that certain qualities are essential to successful therapy – trust, discretion, motivation, confidentiality and respect. With therapy tailored to your needs, he will ensure you to find a way to get your life back on track.
Nutritional therapy practitioners like Michaela Jezzard use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health. Nutritional therapy is recognised as a complementary medicine and is relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking for support to enhance their health and wellbeing.
I hope that you can see from all of the above that there is a great deal of variety at Lushington Chiropractic which means we are able to help people in a completely holistic way
This is why it is such a unique experience to work here!!
Lushington Chiropractic can help people of all ages
My parents have both used Lushington Chiropractic.
My 90 year old Dad came to see Mykel Mason (Doctor of chiropractic) with shoulder pain and a problem with his ankle, his ankle is much improved and his shoulder was getting a lot better until he had a fall and fractured his wrist which needed wiring and the neck of his humerus which needed pining! He will be returning to continue chiropractic treatment when he is fully healed.
My 86 year old Mum also came to see Mykel with a problem with her arm and a numbness in her fingers in one hand, Mykel worked very hard to help Mum with adjustments and suggestions of various exercises she could do to help increase her range of motion, she has also had a number of therapeutic massages with Sue Hudson.
They have both been very pleased with the treatment they have had but also commented on how friendly and welcoming the clinic was, they particularly found our wonderful team of clinic assistants very kind and helpful!
They both enjoyed coming to our Open day here in Eastbourne which was held on a lovely sunny day in July last year, they were very interested to hear about all the other therapies offered at Lushington Chiropractic, Why not come along to the Wellbeing Open Day this year on Wednesday 28th October 10.00am – 2.00pm where Lushington Chiropractic is celebrating its 10th Birthday!!
Its 10 years since James Revell (Doctor of Chiropractic) first opened the doors of Lushington Chiropractic and it has come a long way!
The clinic has 10 years of proven award winning service to over 8,000 local people
You can be sure of a warm welcome at Lushington Chiropractic
My Clinic Assistant Experience
My Clinic Assistant Experience
Hi I’m Judy, eighteen months ago I was looking for a job after working in the same place for 13 years, I had no idea what I might be qualified for as my husband had been my boss for the last 20 years and he didn’t really ask for a CV!!! (he would have said what’s a cv!)
I saw a job advertised for a clinic assistant at Lushington Chiropractic, could this be the job for me, could I do it?!! I knew by the job description that it was more than a straight forward receptionist job but I had no idea exactly what I would be letting myself in for!!
It was definitely the right decision to apply as now I am part of a wonderful team of people doing a job that I really enjoy where no 2 days are ever the same!! I sometimes feel like I am running around like a headless chicken but I always feel satisfied at the end of the day that I have had a good day.
The Chiropractors are really dedicated to helping people be the best they can be with regards to their health.
I was surprised how much was involved with chiropractic treatment. They help people when they are in a lot of pain but it doesn’t stop there they also advise on exercise, posture, good diet and nutrition to help maintain their recovery.
The massage therapists are excellent at providing sports massages that compliment the work done by the Chiropractors or just a lovely firm massage to get rid of the stresses of the week!
My fellow clinic assistants couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful and I learnt so much about how to deal with people in a caring, friendly and professional way by just watching them at work. They definitely can be compared to the graceful swan or duck swimming on the lake looking so serene and behind the scenes trying to juggle 6 jobs at a time whilst taking a phone call, sorting the washing and making a cup of coffee!
I have learnt a lot about what Chiropractic actually is and have watched the chiropractors adjusting their guests which has been really interesting as prior to joining the clinic I had no idea what an adjustment actually was. I am continually learning new things about chiropractic
The guests were all lovely, when they realised I was new they were very kind and understanding as I found my way around the appointment booking system!
Lushington Chiropractic continues to be a growing practice and I hope to grow with it for many years to come
