How did I get to where I am today at Lushington Chiropractic Clinic in Eastbourne?
My name is Emma and I’m a chiropractor in Eastbourne. I commonly get asked why I decided to become a chiropractor and why I chose to practise in Eastbourne, so I thought I’d tell you a little bit more about me!
How did I get introduced to chiropractic?
I grew up in Hampshire and had a keen interest in horses from a young age. My parents took me for my first lesson when I was four and I haven’t stopped since! My dad spent a lot of time helping me at the local stables, but often suffered from low back pain. He regularly visited a local chiropractor and this was my first introduction to the chiropractic world. It became clear to me, even as a child, the benefits chiropractic care could have on a person’s quality of life.
As I got older, my friends were choosing a career path and I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I knew from my part-time job at my local equestrian centre that I loved working with people, and my studies at college highlighted that I was very interested in how the human body works. Around this time, a chiropractor visited the stables to treat both the riders and the horses. After watching a couple of treatments and seeing the range of treatment options chiropractors can offer, I became very interested in a career as a chiropractor.
I visited the chiropractor that treated my dad and was really impressed with the way he listened to everything the patients said, examined them to find the cause of their complaint and explained what was going on in a way that was easy to understand. I also loved the interaction with such a wide range of people and listening to all of the stories they had to offer! I enjoyed being there so much that I then worked at the clinic as a receptionist during my gap year when I finished college.
I then went on to suffer with shoulder pain myself and received treatment from a chiropractor. This was when I realised the importance of musculoskeletal health and decided I wanted to pursue a career in chiropractic.
My time at AECC University College studying a Masters in Chiropractic
I moved to Bournemouth and enrolled to study a Masters in Chiropractic. From the very first day I loved the hands-on approach to learning and really enjoyed being surrounded by people with the same interests as me. I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to examine, diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions using many different treatment and rehabilitation techniques.
I then spent a year at the on-site teaching clinic in Bournemouth as a chiropractic intern. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to use everything I had learnt in order to diagnose and manage patients of all ages. My youngest patient was three weeks old and my oldest was 87 years old – with everybody else in between! I was also keen to get involved in other projects outside of the teaching clinic and so spent some afternoons working with patients with musculoskeletal complaints at a local GP surgery. I was also involved in a Newborn Breastfeeding Clinic along with student midwives from Bournemouth University, helping mothers overcome breastfeeding issues with newborn babies. These experiences made me realise that I really do enjoy treating a wide range of people who may walk through the door.
Why do I love working at Lushington Chiropractic Clinic in Eastbourne?
The main reason I love working at Lushington Chiropractic Clinic in Eastbourne is the people. From my very first visit, the clinic team and patients gave me a very warm welcome. The clinic offers very high standards of personalised chiropractic care to every patient in Eastbourne and this is something I am passionate about. The team environment is amazing and every single day is different.
It’s also a bonus to be so close to the sea and the countryside – something I have been used to growing up and was very happy to not have to say goodbye to. In my spare time I’m sure you’ll still find me enjoying the coastline in Eastbourne, surrounding myself with horses or trying to get a little bit better at paddle boarding! I look forward to meeting lots more people from Eastbourne and helping you in any way I can.
