Have you ever wondered what extra training chiropractors do?
As chiropractors we undergo regular chiropractic training in order to keep up to date, and we undertake 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) per year. This might include training to refresh our knowledge, to learn new techniques, or to learn about current research regarding treatment of patients. It is our choice which courses we do, so we can pick those CPD courses which align with our personal interests, but usually they have a direct link to patient treatment or management.
Recently three of the team here at Lushington Chiropractic in Eastbourne went on a course focusing on Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT). This is a chiropractic technique originally developed by Dr M.B. DeJarnette – a man who was originally an engineer in the 1920s and later trained as a chiropractor and osteopath. SOT is commonly known for its use in cranial work, although it also involves detailed analysis and correction of the spine, pelvis, extremities and visceral system. Like other chiropractic techniques, SOT also corrects abnormal spinal mechanics and any associated nerve problems. It is therefore suitable for all, and is a very gentle technique.
Other CPD training that I have completed in recent years includes a McKenzie exercise course, which teaches exercises that are given to patients to allow them to relieve their symptoms at home. I’ve found this particularly useful for people with acute low back and leg pain. I also did a recent course on the treatment of shoulder injuries that affect the tendons, called rotator cuff tendinopathies.
These types of injuries are common in people over the age of 40 and sports people, so the CPD was invaluable in treating many of my patients. In addition, several years ago I also did a course in dry needling, which is similar to acupuncture and a great way of managing chronic long-term pain caused by tight muscles.
By the time your read this we will also have finished a second SOT course and will be looking forward to many more interesting CPD courses in the future!
