Here’s why chiropractors use X-rays?
After an initial consultation with a patient, further information may be required to help us understand a medical condition. In some cases I may decide that an x-ray is the most effective way of accessing the information I need. At university, chiropractors are taught to take and read x-rays to assess what is going on inside the body and gain a clearer picture of spinal alignment.
What is there to see on an X-ray?
When I have got an x-ray I make full use of it by assessing the alignment of the joints and bones. The picture can help me understand what condition the bone is in i.e. are there any bone growths, is there loss of bone density, are there any signs of possible nasties etc.
I also look at the cartilage thickness by assessing the size of the gap between the bones at the joint; and look for any soft tissue signs such as swelling. This allows me to get as much possible information and therefore provide the best treatment for my guests.
Often I know what I am going to see. There are times where I know that there is going to be wear and tear (osteoarthritis) but I want to know specifically how much and exactly where it is.
X-rays can also help me in case one of my guests requires referral to another healthcare professional.
What role do x-rays have?

I see x-rays as an essential in day to day practice, not in every case, but in those that require further information. However, without a good history and examination to accompany them, x-rays only provide a snap shot.
Here at Lushington we are equipped to take our own x-ray in house! Please get in touch to find out more.
